Stuff N' Stuff

Was June really the last time I posted something? I suppose I have some catching up to do which unfortunately for you means this will probably be a super post...if I can even remember what has happened since then.  I know JR had a birthday and I had a birthday.  I know I had a weekend getaway with my mom and sisters.  I know I got a promotion at work.  I suppose we'll start there.

JR's birthday this year fell on a Sunday which for us means it's gonna be pretty low key.  I made JR a bagel breakfast sandwich before church and later we celebrated with our good friends the Carpenter's over at their place. We had a nice mexican fiesta and oreo cupcakes.  Sadly, that is all.  I couldn't help but feel a bit late since for my last birthday we were in Hawaii.  Hard to live up to that.  Not even a full year left before he joins me in the 30's club!  Perhaps he'll stop making fun of me for being old by then.  Nah, probably not.  While we are on the topic of JR let's get caught up with him shall we?  JR started a new semester in August and I'm pretty sure he over did it this time.  He actually took on being a TA this semester which is great financially but has been a huge time consumer.  He is teaching 3 classes at ASU and he just LOVES grading papers.  Joke, he HATES it.  Don't get me wrong, he loves teaching but really dislikes the grading part.  It takes up way too much of his time. He also found out at the beginning of the semester that they recommend that he take his program comprehensive exam this semester so on top of teaching and classes he is trying to study for that.  He also started taking on clients this semester.  He has a few clients that he meets with in the ASU counseling center and he is really liking it.  He's excited to start his internship next semester and start getting his feet wet.

In August I got to go on a weekend staycation with my mom and sisters.  We found a groupon for a resort up in Carefree, AZ.  The sisters made arrangements for their kids and we high tailed it up on over to Carefree.  It was a lot of fun. I just love spending time with those girls. The resort was quite nice and we had a nice relaxing couple of days.  The first day I had everyone over to my place for dinner before taking off.  That first night we made these letters to hang on our doors (thanks Pinterest).  In the morning we had breakfast, spent some time at the pool and out to dinner to Mimi's Cafe.  We walked around at some shops nearby before heading back to the resort for more girl talk.  The last day we went out to lunch and walked around Ikea before having to get back to normal life.  I am so thankful for such amazing women in my life. I couldn't imagine having to move away from them again.

Shortly after this trip my sweet mom found out she has breast cancer.  Most of the results were very positive but with the type of cancer it is she will still have to go through both Chemotherapy and Radiation.  It's really hard to think of my mom having to go through such hard things but she has always been such a rock for me and I know she's going to overcome this challenge in her life just like others she has had.  Here we are below with my mom after she had her lumpectomy.  She starts her chemo next week.

Last month I got a promotion at work. This was truly a miracle promotion. Not that I'm not a good worker or anything but let me explain, I work in a call center.  A call center where if each call on average is not under 3 minutes and 40 seconds you are not very good.  To me, that was REALLY hard and I never met that goal once.  My time was always super high in comparison to everyone else to the point where just a couple months ago I was concerned I might get fired if I didn't start turning things around.  I was able to pull my time down a little which kept me out of the danger zone but was still much higher than others.  Luckily, when they graded my calls my quality was always really good. Between this and never being late or missing a day of work I was able to get a pretty good review which gave me the opportunity to apply for other positions.  I knew this might be my only chance to get the heck out of customer service.  I started looking for postings in other departments when my co-worker suggested I apply for a lead position in my current department.  That had not even crossed my mind since I had myself convinced I was not looked highly upon because of my phone time average.  I thought, what the heck, no harm in trying.  I was up against some people who were awesome and had already had some opportunities to get themselves "out there" in the eye of leadership. I on the other hand, had pretty much always been focused on just myself in an attempt to try to bring up my numbers.  Turns out that a lot of the people who probably would have gotten the position over me were not eligible to apply because of things like attendance.  Then two others got offered position in different departments that they accepted.  My first interview I did not feel went well but I got called in for a second interview anyways. After this interview my supervisor pulled me aside and asked me how important it was that I not work on Sundays.  I knew this could be a deal breaker but I told her I was really firm on not working Sundays. I thought I had lost the job.  It's amazing what putting a little trust in the Lord can do as I got offered the position a few days later. I was seriously shocked!  I went from feeling pretty much like a no one at work to becoming a lead.  Seriously, I feel like this was a tender mercy.  The Lord knew how unhappy I was with my current position and he provided just the right circumstances to get me out.  Now, I don't dread going to work. I actually like it!  And the extra money is nice too....

And last but not least, I had another birthday.  Since I had to work and JR had school we went out to dinner the night before to the Melting Pot.  That was quite fancy and delicious.

So fast forward to my actual birthday and JR of course was thoughtful and amazing even with everything he has going on. He got up at like 5 am and went to the store to get stuff for breakfast, make breakfast and decorate.  I got woken up to this beauty:

There is a story behind this glorious waffle.  When JR and I were in Vegas we frequented the restaurant Serendipity as you may remember (mmmm, frozen hot chocolate).  Well, after viewing a picture of their waffles I really wanted to get some but we never made it there early enough to order off their breakfast menu. I was quite sad.  So JR recreated these waffles for my birthday. He must have looked up the menu and the description and gone to town. Here is a picture from their website:
Serendipity 3

Pretty dang close huh?  He even had the middle layer in there with the extra whip cream and banana sliced.  It was delicious!  He also gave me that little wand you see next to the waffles advising me that I was the birthday princess for the day followed by a toss of birthday confetti in the air. It's these little things that just make him so dang cute!  Oh man, I love him.  Then he went to school and I left for work to find this:

Then we didn't see each other again until like 8:30.  We got some quick dinner from Jimmy John's and opened up my birthday present:

The day of my birthday came and went but little did I know it wasn't over.  The following day I came home form work to find another present.  It was a box of amaretto fudge.  My favorite!  The next day he surprised me with another birthday dinner at Grimaldi's pizza.  And finally a couple days after that he took me shopping for some new shorts since he knew I wanted some.  So my birthDAY turned into my birthWEEK.  It was a really nice week and I'm thankful for a husband who always makes me feel so special.

So that sums up the last 3 months.  Thanks for coming!

Still kickin

Remember when I used to be good at blogging?  I remember that.  We may never know what happened friends but, here is an update on the Payne family in no particular order.

JR was as sweet as ever when mothers day came around and spent half the night making his own version of an edible arrangement for me.  What man does this? Mine does...and he's awesome.
He even cut pineapple stars and heart shaped watermelon.  I couldn't have been more impressed.  So cute!

We took a trip back to Fresno while JR was in between school session.  As ghetto as Fresno is, we sure do miss it.  We made such good friends there and it was our first little adventure together as a married couple.  We experienced a lot of new things there.  We will always have a bond with Fresno .  We were lucky to be there during our old wards Tri Tip dinner fundraiser for the young men so not only was it a great way to see everyone, but we got to eat delicious tri tip. We miss tri tip. Why does California seem to be the only place obsessed with it?  I got to go bowling and to dinner with some girls in the ward one night while JR hung out with some of his old school friends.  We also got to see some of mine and JR's old co-workers.  One day we drove to Hanford to get some ice cream from the dairy down there.  It was a short trip but it was so nice to get away and reminisce.  I took a total of two, yes, two pictures while we were there and surprise surprise, they were of food.  Pathetic?  I think so.  FYI, not only am I not good at blogging anymore but I'm not good at picture taking any more either.  How lazy have I gotten?
Trip Tip Sandwiches at the Dog House Grill.  A little treasure we didn't discover until a couple months before we moved:

We polished that ice cream off by the way.

JR is now doing summer school.  He got a TA position at ASU that he will start in the fall.  It's going to keep him super busy but he'll get tuition paid for plus a stipend and health benefits.  Such a blessing.  He'll be teaching six, 7 week classes and between the classes he'll be teaching and the classes he'll be taking he'll be commuting between 3 different ASU campus'.  We just found out today that he got the internship at the site he wanted!  He only looked and interviewed at that one location and apparently he nailed it!  Sunday is JR's birthday.  One year closer to 30!  I think he's taking getting older worse than me!
As for me, I've just been working. I get a new schedule starting Monday that I'm pretty excited about.  I'll be working four, 10 hour shifts and I'll actually get two days off in a row plus Friday night!  I still have to work on Saturdays but, eh, what can you do?  I'll still be working nights too but couldn't give up the shift differential, nor the sleep.
I was called to the camp committee in my ward, so I got to go to girls camp with the young women last week which was so much fun.  I only got to go for two days because I had to work but I loved it so much. I miss working with the young women. They so take me back to high school and I feel more like one of them than a leader. Maybe that's not a good thing. haha!  The girls in my ward are such good girls too.  I loved them!  We did ward camp as opposed to stake camp which I had never experienced before.  I think it turned out really well.  We had about 15 girls and our camp site was really nice.  We slept in tents but still had toilets with running water and showers (which the girls were quite pleased with).  Now that camp is over I guess that means I don't have a calling any more and will be forgotten by all of the young women.  Tear.
Well, I think that about catches you up...to the best of my memory anyways.

4 Years Vegas Style

JR and I had the pleasure of celebrating 4 wonderful years of marriage a couple weeks ago. Can you believe it's been that long? Every year we have gone somewhere for our anniversary and we almost decided to stay home this year but what's the fun in that? Instead, we partied in Vegas! In our case, what happens in Vegas does not need to stay in Vegas. We share!
We didn't actually go to Vegas until the week after our anniversary. On our anniversary we pretty much only had time for dinner since JR was in the middle of midterms. We went to Bucca Di Beppo and had ourselves a nice dinner.
And a not so nice dessert.  I've always been curious about Cannoli's but unfortunately they were not good.  At least not here. Are they normally good?
When we asked our server to take a picture for us this is what we got:
Not exactly what we were looking for but hey, that's cool!  We warned him we were going to put him on the internet and sure enough, there he is.

As far as Vegas goes, it was a very fast and furious trip.  We drove up on a Wednesday and back on Friday.  I feel like we pretty much ran from place to place and I thought our feet were going to fall off.  I felt like such an old woman each morning when my hips hurt from walking all day.  Haha!  We stayed at Treasure Island which was pretty nice. No complaints there.

We had a list of a bunch of free things to do in Vegas (cause that's the way we roll) so we were scrambling to get them all in.  We started with going to see a Circus Show at Circus Circus.  That was pretty short and sweet.  I didn't realize they only did about a 5 minute show every half an hour. We saw a couple skate on about a 5 foot in diameter circle.  Oooh, ahhhh...

We tried to get some tickets to free shows after that but to no avail so we walked the strip instead. We walked around the Paris hotel which was one of my favorites, I love the way they recreated the Streets of Paris inside.

Next we hit up our groupon for Pink's hotdogs which made JR sick. JR never, I mean never, throws food away but when he threw away about half of his hot dog burrito I knew he was not pleased. Yes, I said hot dog burrito.

We just walked and walked and kept walking.  There sure is a lot to see in Vegas.

We got to the MGM grand where we heard we could see us some Lions but were informed there were no Lions to be seen this time of year.  Sure wish we hadn't walked 2.5 miles to get there.  Oh well.  So we headed to the Bellagio which we knew was sure to please.  Oh how I love you Bellagio dancing waters.  You are so pretty pretty.

Then we had to rush back to our hotel to see the Sirens of Treasure Island show on the strip.  Not such a great script on that one.  But, enteratining and free none the less.
Thursday we slept in and headed over to Serendipity.  It was not a disappointment in New York and it was not a disappointment in Vegas. 2 thumbs up for that place.  We did in fact have this little beauty for breakfast:

For those of you who have never tried a Frozen Hot Chocolate. I'm sorry.  We did have real breakfast after our dessert for those of you who may be worried about our nutrition habits.

We then headed over to the Las Vegas temple for a little time away from the "world" in just about every sense of the word.

Next we spent quite some time at the Venetian where we went on a Gondola Ride
We had a women Gondolier.  Never seen that before.  She was good though, sang to us and everything!

We saw the Painted ceilings in the lobby which were pretty cool:

We had the best burger of our life at I (heart) Burgers and finished off with seeing The Phantom of the Opera Las  Vegas Spectacular.  We were both pretty impressed with all the crazy effects they were able to pull off on stage.  They had all sorts of things popping out of the ground and falling from the ceiling and what not.

Then we headed of to the Bellagop where we saw the wold's tallest Chocolate fountain:
A conservatory:

Then back to Serenditpity for round 2.  I'm not kidding. Go there.  Now!  And take me with you.

And finally, we drove to the Las Vegas sign for a photo op.
JR wants me to point out that in this next picture he is making fun of plankers and is not being an actual planker:

Funny story, when we were driving to the Sign around midnight we were stopped at a stop light and some random guy walks towards our car and tries to get in.  I'm pretty sure he was drunk and thought we were a Taxi but I was real scared as I saw him trying to open our door and get in. Glad he didn't hijack our car.

On Friday we had some Gelato for breakfast:
Enjoyed more time at the Venetian, walked around Caeasar Palace and more walking the strip

We ended our stay with a lunch buffet. How appropriate right?  On our way home we stopped in Kingman and got to see JR's sisters family and my friend Ellie.  So good to see all of them!
It was a really fun trip and I'm so grateful JR and I got to get away for awhile and have a nice relaxing eventful 3 days.
